Becoming an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist: A Step-by-Step Guide

Embarking on the path to AASECT certification is a commendable and transformative journey, signaling a deep commitment to excellence in the field of sexuality. As a practicing sex therapist, I've navigated this path myself and now have the privilege of guiding others along their journey. Today, I want to break down the AASECT certification process into clear, actionable steps, emphasizing the pivotal role of supervision in achieving this esteemed credential.

Understanding AASECT Certification

AASECT certification is a testament to a professional's dedication, expertise, and ethical practice in sex therapy, counseling, or education. It is recognized globally and sets a standard for excellence in the field. Achieving this certification not only enhances your professional credibility but also enriches your ability to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those you serve.

5 EASY Steps to AASECT Certification as a Sex Therapist

The path to certification involves several key steps, each designed to build upon your knowledge, skills, and understanding of sexual health and ethics. The pre-step is getting a masters degree and a state license. You must be fully licensed to practice therapy as an LCSW, LPC/LMHC, or a LMFT to become a sex therapist, but you can start working on the process before full licensure. I started immediately after graduating from my master’s program.

  1. Join AASECT: visit the website and sign up @ your appropriate membership level.

  2. Find & hire a supervisor: Hiring an AASECT-approved supervisor is the most crucial step, as it provides personalized guidance, professional growth opportunities, and a space to reflect on and improve your practice. You’ll need 50 hours of supervision and 25 can be obtained through a group format.  Now, of course, I’m going to shamelessly plug myself here (Natalie A. N. Elliott, CPCS, LMFT-S, & CST-S), but there’s a full list: https://www.aasect.org/locate-supervisor

  3. Enroll  in an education program:  Here are 3 recommendations:

    1. www.LearnSexTherapy.com

    2. www.modernsextherapyinstitutes.com

    3. The Michigan State Program

  4. Do the work: 300 hours of direct clinical work (under supervision) is needed. This hands-on experience is vital for applying theoretical knowledge to real-life cases.

  5. Take a SAR: A SAR (Sexuality Attitude Reassessment) is a 14-hour workshop that will help you identify your sexual values. The hope is that you process any discomfort you have regarding sexual topics before they occur in one of your therapy sessions.
