5 EASY Steps to AASECT Certification as a Sex Therapist
The path to certification involves several key steps, each designed to build upon your knowledge, skills, and understanding of sexual health and ethics. The pre-step is getting a masters degree and a state license. You must be fully licensed to practice therapy as an LCSW, LPC/LMHC, or a LMFT to become a sex therapist, but you can start working on the process before full licensure. I started immediately after graduating from my master’s program.

Find & hire a supervisor: Hiring an AASECT-approved supervisor is the most crucial step, as it provides personalized guidance, professional growth opportunities, and a space to reflect on and improve your practice. Enroll in an education program: Here are 3 recommendations:
Do the work: 300 hours of direct clinical work (under supervision) is needed. This hands-on experience is vital for applying theoretical knowledge to real-life cases.
Take a SAR: A SAR (Sexuality Attitude Reassessment) is a 14-hour workshop that will help you identify your sexual values. The hope is that you process any discomfort you have regarding sexual topics before they occur in one of your therapy sessions.
